ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth used three second-half goals to snap a scoreless tie on the way to a 3-1 men's soccer victory over Utica Saturday at Golden Flyer Stadium.

The victory enabled the Golden Flyers to remain unbeaten at 5-0, while Utica dropped to 4-2 overall. The game was the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams.

Nazareth generated seven shots in the first half to Utica's six, but the Golden Flyers added 13 more shots in the second half. The Golden Flyers finally broke through in the 67th minute as midfielder James Wheeler sent a perfect cross-field pass to the foot of Ryan Foley, who completed the play for his second goal of the season.

Nazareth scored again in the 82nd minute when a corner kick by Wheeler deflected off the head of a Utica defender before finding its way into the goal. The third goal came less than three minutes later as junior Luke Elston netted his team-leading seventh goal of the season with an assist from freshman Anthony Calarco.

Utica avoided the shutout in the 85th minute when Daniel Garcia converted a penalty kick after being knocked down in the penalty area.

Sophomore #J.P. Horan# played all 90 minutes in goal for Nazareth and had five stops, including a diving save on a point-blank attempt by Alex Sheridan shortly after Nazareth's first goal. Utica's Anthony Caruso made seven saves. The Pioneers played a man down for the last 13 minutes after Jeffrey Cupka gained a second yellow card.
