HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The women's and men's cross country teams each began their season on Saturday at the Harry Lang Invitational, hosted by Colgate University. In a meet in which several division one schools competed, the Golden Flyers' women's team placed ninth overall, and the men's team finished 11th. The women were led by seniors
Kelsey Ryan and
Lauren Jamieson and junior
Lauren Heitzhaus. In the men's race, senior
Pete Fekete paced Nazareth, followed by junior
Matt Fedrizzi.
Syracuse won the team title in the women's race with a total score of 24 points. The Orange placed four runners in the five places. Bucknell finished second with 60 points, followed by Navy with 67 points. The Golden Flyers tallied 272 total points to finish ninth overall.
Ryan, Jamieson, and Heitzhaus finished in a span of four seconds for Nazareth's first three finishers. Ryan finished the 4200-meter course in 73rd place overall with a time of 18:21, folllowed by Jamieson's (74th) time of 18:22, and Heitzhaus' (75th) time of 18:25. Freshman
Shanna Swanson placed 77th with a time of 18:41.
Additionally, freshmen
Courtney Pitman placed 84th overall with a time of 19:11, and senior
Kayleigh Olive finished 86th with a time of 19:19. Freshman
Bridget Dunbar rounded out the Golden Flyers' top seven three seconds later as she finished in 87th place overall.
In the men's meet, Syracuse also claimed the team total with a total of 22 points. The Orange had six runners place inside the top nine places to win the meet. Navy finished second with 56 points, followed by American in third with 78 points. Nazareth recorded 328 points to finish 11th overall.
Fekete completed the men's 6400-meter race in 71st place and a time of 22:40 to lead the Golden Flyers. Fedrizzi finished second for Nazareth in 84th place and a time of 23:29. Senior
Josh Strough (91st) finished in 24:15, followed by freshman
Patrick Neureuter (94th) in 24:37. Juniors
Jake Lafaver (99th) and Zach Lafaver (106th) rounded out the men's runners with times of 25:34 and 28:52, respectively.
The Golden Flyers compete again on September 8th at the Houghton Invitational.
