ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Juniors
Luke Elston and
James Wheeler each scored two goals Friday for Nazareth as the Golden Flyers won their season opener in men's soccer with a 4-2 victory over SUNY Canton. The game was played at RIT's Tiger Stadium as part of the ninth annual Doug May Invitational.
With the game tied at 2-2 late in the second half, Elston scored both of his goals for the Golden Flyers. The first came off an assist from junior
Ryan Foley 16:24 left. He scored again with less than six minutes left off an assist from Wheeler. Nazareth also defeated SUNY Canton, 4-1, in its 2011 season opener.
Wheeler, a first-team Empire 8 Conference all-star in 2011, scored early in both halves to give the Golden Flyers one-goal leads each time. He scored just over a minute into the game for the only goal of the first half as Nazareth claimed an early edge. Then, after SUNY Canton tied the score early in the second half, Wheeler answered for Nazareth with an unassisted tally in the 50th minute.
SUNY Canton tied the score again at 2-2 just 44 seconds after Wheeler's second goal as Abdulai Jagana converted a penalty kick for the Kangaroos. Then Elston, the Golden Flyers' leading goal-scorer in 2011, took over by netting his 12th and 13th career goals for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth had a 14-11 edge in shots, while corner kicks were even at four. Sophomore #J.P. Horan# made his first career start in goal for Nazareth and had three saves.
Action resumes Saturday with Nazareth playing Brockport at 2:30 p.m. at RIT.
