ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth struggled offensively Tuesday in a non-conference softball doubleheader at the University of Rochester. The Golden Flyers managed just seven hits in the two games and dropped both ends of the twinbill to the Yellowjackets 4-1 and 6-1.
Nazareth slipped to 2-14 overall. Rochester improved to 10-7.
The Golden Flyers got solid pitching from seniors
Kelly Kocher and
Casey Mathers, but Nazareth had just three hits in the first game and four in the second. In tthe first game, Kocher surrendered nine hits and struck out six. In the second game, Mathers gave up six hits and had three strikeouts.
In the first game, Nazareth led 1-0 after scoring its only run in the first inning. Sophomore
Kailey Ritch led off the game with a walk and moved to third on a double by sophomore
Sarah Cipperly and scored on throwing error. The Yellowjackets tied the score with a run in the bottom of the first and then went ahead with three runs in the fourth with senior Cara Celorio delivering a two-run triple.
Nazareth had a chance in the sixth after loading the bases with walks to Ritch and
Shauna Bardanis and a single by Cipperly. The Yellowjackets escaped damage when freshman pitcher Sarah Wayson struck out the next three Nazareth hitters.
Game two was amazingly similar as Nazareth took a 1-0 lead in the first after Ritch opened the game with a single to center. Two fielding errors later, Nazareth was ahead. Rochester took the lead for good with three runs in the second with the help of two Nazareth fielding errors.
Nazareth threatened in the fifth inning after Ritch doubled and moved to third on an infield hit by Cipperly. UR pitcher Brittany Grage was ale to retire Mathers on a fly ball to end the threat. The Yellowjackets scored one more run in the fifth on a solo homer by Nina Korn and then added two more runs in the sixth.
Nazareth is back in action Wednesday at home for a non-conference doubleheader against Brockport at 3 p.m.
