SCRANTON, Pa. -- Visiting Nazareth rallied from an early deficit and outscored Scranton 6-2 in the second half Wednesday to pull away for a 9-5 men's lacrosse victory in a non-conference game.
The Golden Flyers improved to 2-1 overall, while Scranton lost for the first time and dropped to 2-1.
Trailing 3-1 late in the first quarter, Nazareth went on a six-goal scoring spree that covered the second and third quarters as the Golden Flyers methodically pulled away for the victory.
A goal by junior midfielder
Chris Peterson with :58 left in the first quarter triggered the scoring run, which included two goals apiece for senior #C.J. Estes
and sophomore Collin Clark#, who also assisted on Peterson's goal. Estes scored the first goal of the game and then added the only goal for either team in the second quarter to tie the score at 3-3 by halftime.
The Golden Flyers then erupted for four goals in the third quarter. Junior midfielder
Brian Wright scored unassisted early in the period, then Estes netted his third goal of the game off an assist from senior middie
John McDonnell just over two minutes later to extend the score to 5-3. Clark followed with a pair of goals, the second one coming unassisted with just :06 left in the quarter to put Nazareth up 7-3.
Scranton interrupted the scoring run on a goal by Dan Slade early in the fourth quarter, but Nazareth freshman
Kyle Fanning answered with an extra-man goal, the first of his career, off an assist from Estes just :34 later. Scranton added a late score, but Fanning scored again with :33 left.
Scranton had taken a 3-1 lead in the first quarter as Taylor Nelson scored three times for the Royals in a span of 2:24 to erase an early 1-0 deficit. Nazareth then held the Royals scoreless for more than 36 minutes.
Scranton had a 26-22 edge in shots, but Nazareth had 37 ground balls to just 23 for Scranton and the Golden Flyers won 10 of 18 face-offs. Junior
Tim Doyle played all 60 minutes in goal and needed to make just four saves. Freshman
Drew Simoneau won 8 of 15 faceoffs and had four ground balls. Estes and freshman defender
Jerry Chasteen also had four ground balls.
Nazareth is off this weekend, but plays again Wednesday again Bowdoin in Clermont, Fla.
