Nazareth falls to No. 3 Cortland

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Cortland's Lindsay Abbott scored five goals, including four in a row during a six-goal flurry late in the first half as the third-ranked Red Dragons defeated host Nazareth in a non-conference women's lacrosse game, 21-7.

Abbott, the Red Dragons' leading scorer, with 49 points, also had five assists as Cortland improved to 6-1 overall. Junior Megan Cregan scored twice for the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 2-4 overall.

Cortland never trailed, but the game was close for the first 20 minutes or so. Nazareth used a three-goal run to close within 6-5 with 9:48 left in the first half. Cregan scored both of her goals less than a minute apart and junior Alyssa Johnston added a free-position goal to put the Golden Flyers within striking distance.

Cortland then scored the next six goals, including four by Abbott to build a 12-5 advantage. Nazareth interrupted the run on a goal by Amy mcIntosh with :25 left in the half.

The Red Dragons' lead continued to grow in the second half as they outscored Nazareth 9-1 over the final 30 minutes. Senior Erin Kollar scored three of her four goals in the second half and Gina Campese also scored twice.

Cortland had a 42-16 advantage in shots and the Red Dragons captured 21 of 30 draw controls. Cortland's Laura Edward won eight draws individually.

In addition to Cregan's two goals, Nazareth got one goal and two assists from junior Erinn Wood. Juniors Leah Cronister and Kayleigh Pearson also scored goals. Sophomore Tara Prosak played all 60 minutes in goal and had 14 saves.

The Golden Flyers play again Saturday as they open their Empire 8 Conference schedule with a game at Alfred at 1 p.m.
