ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Nazareth defeated D'Youville 3-1 in a Wednesday evening home match in men's volleyball. The set scores were 25-16, 25-27, 25-20, and 25-19. The Golden Flyers' record is now 21-7 overall and 8-3 in the United Volleyball Conference, while the Spartans' record drops to 9-14 overall and 4-7 in the UVC.
In the first set, Nazareth managed to create a six-point lead over D'Youville with a score of 18-12. D'Youville made an attempt to rally during the first set; however, Nazareth continued to pull away from the Spartans, finally clutching a nine point lead. Nazareth ended the set with 14 kills and four errors over D'Youville's six kills and seven errors.
In the second set, a one-point difference remained between the teams' scores until D'Youville led Nazareth 16-15, causing Nazareth to call their only timeout of the match. Play remained neck-and-neck throughout the remainder of the set until D'Youville claimed the final set point. At the set's completion, Nazareth had accumulated 15 kills and six errors, and D'Youville held 13 kills and three errors.
The start of the third set appeared grim for the Golden Flyers, as they trailed D'Youville until reaching a score of 4-4 with a kill by junior
Alex Houghtalen. Nazareth continued to climb with two kills by senior
Ellis Walsh and two kills and an ace from junior
Robert Kraft. Before long, Nazareth had created a 12-8 lead. Despite D'Youville's efforts, Nazareth continued to tally points throughout the set, eventually resulting in a 25-20 win. Nazareth finished the third set with 15 kills and three errors, while D'Youville recorded 10 kills and four errors.
The Spartans began the fourth set equipped to score with an assisted block from junior Jay Senozetnik and senior Rob Dykeman. However, Nazareth gradually rallied to regain the lead at 18-17. Once ahead, Nazareth began a rapid-fire of kills, aces, and blocks to finish the set 25-19 over D'Youville.
Kraft finished with a match-high 14 kills. Kraft also collected one service ace, one solo block, and three assisted blocks. Houghtalen totaled 10 kills, two aces, and eight digs throughout the match, while senior
Dan Miranda tallied seven kills, one solo block, and one assisted block. Junior setter
EJ Wells-Spicer assisted 39 of the Golden Flyers' 53 kills, and also managed one kill, two aces, and one assisted block.
Nazareth will compete in the Vassar Invitational March 30-31, beginning with a match against Johnson & Wales on Friday at 4 p.m.
