AMHERST, Mass. -- Fifth-ranked Amherst used a six-goal outburst in the fourth quarter Saturday to break open a close men's lacrosse game as the Lord Jeffs held off visiting Nazareth for a 13-8 victory.

Amherst remained unbeaten at 7-0, while the Golden Flyers slipped to 3-4 overall.

Nazareth used third-quarter goals from Brian Wright and Nate DeLone to close within 7-5 heading into the final 15 minutes. Amherst, however, scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to regain momentum as well as a four-goal cushion and the Lord Jeffs were comfortably ahead the rest of the way.

"It was a good game for about three and a hlf quarters," said Nazareth Coach Rob Randall. "They are a very good team that took advantage of a few mistakes that we made.'

Devin Acton scored five goals and added one assist for Amherst, including three goals in the fourth quarter to help the Lord Jeffs pull away. Evan Redwood added three goals, including an unassisted score with 3:19 left to give Amherst its largest advantage of the game at 13-7.

Nazareth led 2-1 early on goals by seniors #C.J. Estes and John McDonnell#. Amherst responded with three straight goals to open a 4-2 advantage after one period and the Lord Jeffs never trailed again. Wright scored for Nazareth to open the second quarter, but Amherst got a goal from Acton and two more by Redmond in a span of 2:47 to extend the Lord Jeffs' lead to 7-3 by halftime.

Nazareth made it close with a solid third quarter as goalie Tim Doyle made four of his 11 saves to keep the Lord Jeffs off the scoreboard during that 15-minute stretch. Estes scored two of his team-best three goals for Nazareth in the fourth quarter and sophomore middie Trevar Haefele also scored.

Amherst had advantages in shots (38-32) and ground balls (34-32). Nazareth's Drew Simoneau won 15 of the 25 face-offs and scooped up a team-best eight ground balls.

Nazareth plays again Wednesday as the Golden Flyers open their Empire 8 Conference schedule at Utica at 4 p.m.
