TUCSON, Ariz. -- Nazareth wrapped up its spring break excursion to Arizona Friday as the Golden Flyers dropped a pair of softball games. The Golden Flyers rallied for two runs in the sixth inning of a 3-2 loss to Wisconsin-La Crosse. In the second game, Lakeland scored all of its runs in the first three innings of a 9-1 victory.
Nazareth returns home with a 2-8 overall record. The Golden Flyers' next game is March 27 at home vs. Cortland.
In the first game, senior
Kelly Kocher pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine batters, but she was nicked for a pair of unearned runs as La Crosse went up 3-0 with one run in the third and two in the sixth. Nazareth scored two in the bottom of the sixth on run-scoring singles by
Sarah Cipperly and
Casey Mathers, but the Golden Flyers were retired in order in the seventh. Cipperly finished with two of Nazareth's five hits.
Against Lakeland, Nazareth fell behind early and couldn't recover. Lakeland had 10 of its 12 hits in the first three innings, including a grand slam by sophomore catcher Chelsea Gile.
Nazareth managed only four hits and scored its lone run in the third. Freshman
Nicole Bayona opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by freshman
Danielle Sancilio. Bayona later scored on an error.
