CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fifteenth-ranked Bowdoin built a 6-1 halftime lead and had little difficulty improving to 2-0 overall Wednesday with a 14-7 men's lacrosse victory over Nazareth at the sun-splashed United States Training Center in Clermont.
Nazareth dropped to 2-2 overall and will host Western New England Saturday at 1 p.m. (WYSL-AM 1040 and FM-92.1).
Senior #C.J. Estes# scored three goals and added two assists for Nazareth and now has 98 goals for his career for the Golden Flyers. Keegan Melhorn scored three times for the Polar Bears while Nathan Fritts, Mark Flibotte and Tyler Williams each scored twice. Fritts also had a pair of assists.
Bowdoin also took advantage of faceoff prowess of Brendan Hughes, who won 15 of 22 draws and enabled the Polar Bears to control time of possession as well as the shots (44-24). Hughes also had a game-high 12 ground balls.
Flibotte and Billy Bergner scored extra-man goals for Bowdoin in the first quarter as the Polar Bears built a 2-0 lead. Bowdoin also scored the first three goals of the second quarter, before Nazareth got on the board on a goal by freshman
Kyle Fanning with 10:33 left in the half. Bowdoin's Dan Hanley scored an unassisted goal to make it 6-1 before halftime.
Bowdoin outscored Nazareth 5-3 in the third quarter with the Golden Flyers getting scores from Estes,
Brian Wright and
Collin Clark. Fourth-quarter goals by freshman
Drew Simoneau and Estes enabled Nazareth to close with 12-6 early in the fourth quarter, but Bowdoin answered with goals by Melhorn and Flibotte to erase any Nazareth comeback hopes.
Junior
Tim Doyle played all 60 minutes in goal for Nazareth and made 12 saves. Chris Williamson had eight saves for the Polar Bears. Simoneau won 7 of 15 faceoffs for Nazareth and had three ground balls.
