Nazareth falls twice in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Nazareth dropped two more softball games in Arizona Monday to fall to 0-4 on the early season. The Golden Flyers lost to Lakeland College of Wisconsin, 8-1, in the first game and then were beaten for the second time in as many days by 13th-ranked Central College of Iowa, 9-2.

Against the Lakeland, the Golden Flyers outhit the Muskies 8-7, but were done in by six fielding errors. Freshman Corrin Spallone made her first pitching start for Nazareth and took the loss after walking four and striking out three. Lakeland scored twice in the first inning and then added single runs in the second and sixth innings. The Muskies then broke the game open with four runs in the seventh.

Nazareth's lone run came in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Sarah Cipperly reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on an error. She scored one out later on a single by Casey Mathers. Mathers, Spallone and sophomore Kailey Ritch each had two hits for the Golden Flyers, who stranded seven base runners, including three in the fourth inning.

In the Central game, Nazareth once again had eight hits but the game went scoreless until Central scored five times in the fifth and four more times in tthe sixth. Mathers was the starting pitcher for Nazareth and took the loss. Nazareth's two runs came in the sixth inning. Cipperly doubled and sophomore Liz Toner followed with an infield single. Both runners moved up on stolen bases and Cipperly scored on a wild pitch. Toner then scored on a double by freshman Sophia Rhoades. Cipperly, Rhoades and Toner each finished with two hits.

Nazareth plays two more games Tuesday -- vs. Marian at 4:30 p.m. eastern time, followed by Denison at 6:30 p.m. eastern.
