GENEVA, N.Y. -- Host William Smith scored the first six goals of the game in the opening 10 minutes of the contest, and the Herons went on to defeat Nazareth 14-3 in a non-conference women's lacrosse game. Junior
Alyssa Johnston (Canandaigua/Canandaigua, NY) scored all three of the Golden Flyers' goals. Saturday's game was the season opener for both teams.
Rosie Scheibel, who scored a team-high 32 goals during the 2011 campaign, scored the first three goals of the game in a span of 1:29. William Smith's offense continued to click as the Herons added three additional goals in the next five minutes. Kathleen Ragan scored the Herons' fourth and fifth goals, followed by a goal by Lucy Johnson. Ragan's second goal came after a penalty to Johnson and the Golden Flyers playing down a defender.
Less than a minute after William Smith's sixth goal, Johnston converted a free position shot to put Nazareth on the board. After allowing six goals in a span of 6:39, the Golden Flyers' defense allowed the potent Herons to score just one goal in the final 20 minutes of the half.
William Smith, however, found the back of the Nazareth goal within the first 10 seconds of the second half after winning the draw control. The Herons scored two additional goals before Johnston converted her second free position shot of the contest, which trimmed Nazareth's deficit to 8-2 with about 23 minutes to play in the contest.
The Herons continued to stretch their lead through the middle of the second half with effective offensive and defensive pressure. William Smith finished with converting 22-23 clear attempts and outshot the Golden Flyers 31-18. The Herons also finished with a commanding 30-14 advantage in ground balls, however, Nazareth recorded a 10-9 edge in draw controls.
Scheibel added two additional goals and finished with five goals in the game. Johnston's third goal came with just under four minutes to play in regulation for the Golden Flyers. William Smith's defense held Nazareth scoreless for almost 20 minutes to extend its lead.
Johnston finished with six shots on goal for the Golden Flyers. Juniors
Megan Cregan (Brighton/Rochester, NY) and
Kayleigh Pearson (Indian River/Theresa, NY) each recorded two additional shots on goal. Sophomore
Tara Prosak (Jamesville-DeWitt/Jamesville, NY) amassed a game-high 12 saves for Nazareth.
In addition to Scheibel's goals, Ragan finished with three goals, followed by two goals apiece by Johnson and Callie Frelinghuysen. Maggie McNair finished with nine saves for the Herons.
Nazareth is in action again on Tuesday morning. The Golden Flyers play St. Lawrence in West Palm Beach at 11 a.m.
