ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth dominated visiting Penn State Behrend in a three-set men's volleyball match Wednesday at the Kidera Gymnasium. The Golden Flyers won for the seventh time in their last eight matches by scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-19.
Nazareth, ranked seventh nationally in Division III, improved to 14-5 overall and 5-2 in the United Volleyball Conference. Penn State Behrend, in its first season of intercollegiate play, dropped to 4-13 overall and 2-5 in the UVC.
Freshman
Brody Cord totaled 10 kills with two errors in 17 attempts to pace the Golden Flyers. Junior
Rob Kraft added nine kills in just 12 attempts and senior
Billy Gimello had seven kills.
Nazareth was in control in each of the first two sets as Cord, Kraft and senior
Ellis Walsh each had five kills. The third set was closer until Nazareth pulled away from an 18-18 deadlock by scoring six straight points to go up 24-18. Gimello, Kraft and freshman
Nick McDonagh each recorded kills during the run and Cord had one of his two service aces.
A kill by the Lions' Grant Kocher (7 kills) interrupted the run before Kraft finished off the match with his ninth kill of the night. Junior
EJ Wells-Spicer also had a strong match for the Golden Flyers with 32 assists and four digs.
Nazareth is home again Friday for a non-conference match against ninth-ranked Rivier at 7 p.m.
