Naz drops opener against Springfield, 15-7

Rochester, NY – Nazareth was defeated by Springfield 15-7 in its season opener Saturday. Nazareth is now 0-1 on the season while Springfield improved to 2-0 with the win. Nazareth was led by senior #C.J. Estes# (Hebron Academy/Medfield, MA) and freshman Drew Simoneau (Kimball Union/Manchester, N.H.) who had two goals each for the Golden Flyers. The Pride were led by a five-goal game from sophomore Ryon Lynch and a four-goal game by senior Mike Delia.
 
Nazareth got the scoring started quickly when Simoneau scored just 16 seconds into the game. Springfield then responded with four unanswered goals to close out the first period. Nazareth then started the second period with a two goal rally that pulled them within a single goal at 4-3. Simoneau and freshman Nick Loscalzo (Rocky Point/Miller Place, N.Y.) scored the two goals for the Golden Flyers. Springfield would then score three unanswered before John McDonnell (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) scored for Nazareth just before halftime to trim the deficit to 7-4 at the break.
 
Springfield broke the game open at the start of the second half, scoring five straight goals and holding Nazareth scoreless for over fourteen minutes. Nazareth finally broke the rally when Estes scored with 54 seconds remaining in the half. Sophomore Will Fallo also scored for Nazareth with one second left in the third to trim the deficit to 12-6 going into the final period.
 
Nazareth continued their rally in the fourth, when Estes scored his second goal of the game at the 12:38 mark and cut the Pride lead to five goals. That would be as close as the Golden Flyers would get however, as Springfield closed with three straight scores to claim a 15-7 victory.

Junior Tim Doyle (Palmyra-macedon/Macedon, N.Y.) recorded a game-high 11 saves for the Golden Flyers. Robert Maher finished with five saves for the Pride. Springfield finished the contest with advantages in faceoffs (14-10), shots (46-25), and ground balls collected (28-27).
 
Nazareth now faces a three game stretch of contests away from home, starting next Saturday, March 3rd when they face Geneseo at Monroe Community College. The Flyers return home on March 17th when they take on Western New England at 1:00 p.m.
