PHELPS, N.Y. -- Nazareth defeated Medaille Friday in a non-conference men's volleyball match in four sets. Scores were 25-20, 15-25, 25-20, 25-19. Nazareth, ranked seventh nationally in Division III, improved to 10-4. Medaille is 9-5. The match was played at Midlakes High School as part of a fund-raiser.

Proceeds from the match benefitted the family of former Midlakes player David Crouch, who died in a farming accident shortly after graduation in 2009. More recently, David's father, John Crouch has started treatments for a rare form of blood cancer.

Nazareth's roster includes former Midlakes standouts Dan Mowery and EJ Wells-Spicer, both teammates of David. Another former Midlakes standout, Erin Kelly, plays for Medaille. In addition, Nazareth assistant coach Kyle Salisbury is the boys' varsity coach at Midlakes.

Against the 11th-ranked Mavericks, the Golden Flyers avenged an earlier defeat as junior Alex Houghtalen had 11 kills and senior Billy Gimello added 10. Mowery contributed 10 digs and junior Rob Kraft had six kills on nine swings.

Nazareth returns to United Volleyball Conference play Wednesday at Hilbert at 7 p.m.
