Nazareth outscores Morrisville, 7-3

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth exploded for seven goals to defeat Morrisville in a non-conference field hockey game on Friday evening. Seven different Golden Flyers found the back of the net to lead Nazareth to the 7-3 victory. Junior Alexis Root finished the contest with a goal and two assists to lead the Golden Flyers' attack. Senior Kailee O'Hara and freshman Cathy Stahl also recorded multiple point games as each tallied a goal and an assist.

Following the victory, Nazareth improves to 2-9 overall. The victory snaps the Golden Flyers' nine-game losing streak. The Mustangs fall to 2-11 overall following the loss.

Jamie Anderson opened the scoring 4:18 into the contest for Morrisville after she received a pass from Ilze Stots. Anderson's goal came from the top of the circle following a penalty corner.

The Golden Flyers scored six times in the final 30 minutes of the first half and opening minutes of the second half to take a commanding 6-1 lead. About six minutes after the Mustangs scored, senior Lindsey Smith scored Nazareth's first goal to tie the game. Smith's goal came off a chip from the center of the circle after she received a pass from Stahl. Senior Tessa Knapp gave the Golden Flyers the lead at the 17 minute mark after Root crossed the ball to her on the left post.

Freshman Maggie Muzio, O'Hara, freshman Megan Paris, and Root also scored during Nazareth's run. Muzio's goal came when she tipped in a shot in front of the Mustangs' net. Knapp was credited with the assist. The Golden Flyers added two addtional goals in the final four minutes of the first period. After dribbling down the right side of the field, Root sent a pass to O'Hara, who scored from about seven yards out. Paris closed out the half with an unassisted goal as she buried a shot from the top of the circle. It was Paris' first-career goal at Nazareth.

The Golden Flyers carried their momentum into the second half. Less than three minutes into the second half, Root tipped in Nazareth's sixth goal of the game. Junior Sarah Wazenkewitz recorded the assist on Root's goal.

Midway through the second half, Morrisville scored back-to-back goals to slow Nazareth's attack. The Mustangs' goals came in span of 54 seconds to trim the Golden Flyers' lead to 6-3 with about 20 minutes to play in regulation. Rebecca Meyer and Rebecca Quackenbush scored for Morrisville. Anderson had an assist on each of the Mustangs' goals.

Stahl scored six minutes later to reclaim a four-goal lead for Nazareth. O'Hara set up Stahl's first goal of the season. After dodging the Mustangs' defense, Stahl's shot from the left side slid inside the right post.

Sophomore Shannon Winney finished with a game-high 13 saves, including eight in the first half, to help Nazareth build its multiple goal lead. Nicole Gregg played the first half in net for Morrisville and finished with one save. Gregg allowed five goals. Ellen DePasquale played the second half and allowed two goals and recorded five saves.

The Golden Flyers finished with a 29-28 edge in total shots. The Mustangs finished with a commanding 16-5 advantage in penalty corners. All three of Morrisville's goals were scored following corners.

Nazareth hosts Wells on Saturday in another non-conference contest. Saturday's game begins at 1 p.m.
