Nazareth blanked at Skidmore, 1-0

Golden Flyers complete regular season at 9-5-4

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Host Skidmore scored the game's only goal early in the second half Saturday and the Thoroughbreds held on for a 1-0 non-conference victory over Nazareth in women's soccer.

The game was the final regular-season contest for the Golden Flyers, who are 9-5-4 overall. Skidmore improved to 4-9-2. Nazareth now will turn its attention to next weekend's Empire 8 Conference Tournament. The Golden Flyers are seeded third and will play second-seeded Stevens Saturday at Ithaca at 1:30 p.m. Top-seeded Ithaca hosts St. John Fisher in the other semifinal game. The championship game is Sunday.

Nazareth had slight advantages Saturday in shots (12-7) and corner kicks (5-2) and extended its shutout streak to nearly 450 minutes before Thoroughbreds broke through in the 58th minute. A corner kick off the foot of Michelle Finan resulted in a header for Erin Barry, who delivered her second goal of the season.

To add injury to insult, Nazareth goalie Abbie Carey was hit in the face on the play and had to leave the game. She made four saves before departing. Junior Bethany Novak finished up and made one save.

Nazareth's best chance to tie the score came with just under 10 minutes to play. A shot by Sarah Eichelberger hit the goal post and the rebound off the foot of Anne Czelusniak was saved by Skidmore keeper Gab Lawrence, who had seven saves overall. Eichelberger had three of Nazareth's 12 shots, including a a header from in close that was saved by Lawrence with less than six minutes to play.
