ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Nazareth Golden Flyers lost 1-0 against the Rochester Yellowjackets Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer match at Golden Flyer Stadium. The loss drops the Golden Flyers to 6-3-3 overall and lifts the Yellowjackets to 3-7 overall.
The first half of play was controlled by UR as the Yellowjackets scored the game's only goal before the fourth minute. The goal came off a corner kick from Grace Van der Ven who played the ball into the box and Heather Alico deflected it in for her second goal of the season.
Nazareth fought back with a physical game and did not allow any more goals. The best scoring opportunity for Nazareth came towards the end of the half when senior
Amanda Sudore drove end line and played a low ball into the box, which created a scramble in front of Rochester's net.
In the second half, the Golden Flyers came out organized and prepared to strike back. The play continued to be tough and fast paced as both teams looked to finish their offensive opportunities. Junior
Olivia Derleth was the closest to scoring after she fired a shot just wide of the far post in the 50th minute of play. In the last 10 minutes of the game, Nazareth's
Tori Ryan suffered a serious leg injury that delayed the game for about 30 minutes. When play resumed, the Golden Flyers came out and finished the game in honor of their teammate.
Nazareth managed just five shots overall against a stingy Yellowjackets' defense and senior goalie Bridget Lang made just three saves for her third shutout of the season. Golden Flyer goalkeeper
Abbie Carey finished with seven saves.
Nazareth looks to earn a win against its long time Empire 8 rival, the Ithaca Bombers, on Saturday afternoon at Ithaca College at 12 p.m. The Bombers will go into Saturday's contest ranked sixth nationally with an 11-0 record.
