GENEVA, N.Y. -- Host Hobart scored three times before the game was barely 15 minutes old Tuesday as the Statesmen dominated Nazareth in a non-conference men's soccer match, 5-0, at Boswell Field.
The Golden Flyers, in a rough patch after a 5-0 start, dropped to 6-7 overall, while Hobart improved to 9-4.
Caetano Sanchez had two goals and an assist for Hobart and Alex Kittelberger had a goal and an assist as the Statesmen dominated the action from start to finish. Hobart outshot Nazareth 16-1 in the first half and 30-7 overall.
Kittelberger scored unassisted just 2:35 into the game on a blast from the right side, about 25 yards away for his seventh goal of the season. Will Abbott made it 2-0 in the 12th minute as he scored his second goal of the season off an assist fromn Sanchez. Then in the 16th minute, Hobart connected again as Michael Moulton converted a pass from Kittelberger for his first goal of the season.
Sanchez added both of his goals in the second half -- less than two minutes apart -- to round out the scoring for Hobart.
Nazareth's best scoring opportunity came in the 63rd minute when freshman
Patrick Butigian broke through to just barely get a shot on goal, but goalie Mike Lucas was there to dive onto the ball. In the 83rd minute, the Golden Flyers earned back-to-back corners. They were unable to capitalize as Serafine punched away the first cross into the box, and the second attempt was immediately headed out.
Junior
James Wheeler generated six of Nazareth's seven shots, but Lucas was called upon to make just two saves as he combined with Tyler Serafine for the shutout. Sophomore #J.P. Horan# made six saves for the Golden Flyers.
Despite its recent swoon, the Golden Flyers still have a chance to make the Empire 8 Conference with wins in their last two conference games -- at Ithaca Saturday at 12 noon and at Alfred Oct. 27.
