Nazareth falls at Medaille in 5

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Nazareth men's volleyball team, now ranked fifth nationally in Division III, lost for the third time Tuesday in five early-season matches as 10th-ranked Medaille outlasted the Golden Flyers in five sets. Scores were 25-19, 15-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12.

Nazareth dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the United Volleyball Conference. Medaille is 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the UVC.

Juniors Rob Kraft and Alex Houghtalen each had 10 kills for Nazareth and junior EJ Wells-Spicer amassed 39 assists. Freshman Luke Lawatsch had five kills and five blocks and junior Dan Mowery totaled 12 digs.

Nazareth led 8-5 in the decisive fifth set before Medaille rallied to score four of the next five points to tie the set at 9. The Mavericks, who got a match-best 19 kills from Trevor Barrett, then went on to close out the match.

Nazareth returns to action this weekend at the AVI Inviational at Thiel. Nazaeth plays Thiel and Mount St. Joseph on Saturday and Stevenson and Eastern Mennonite on Sunday.
