ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Rochester tallied the final three goals of the game to defeat Nazareth 3-2 in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday evening. Katie Flashner scored the game-winning goal 9:49 into overtime. The Golden Flyers' goals were score by junior
Tessa Knapp and senior
Lindsey Wagner.
Following the victory, the Yellowjackets remain undefeated with a 3-0 record. Nazareth drops to 0-2 on the young season.
The Golden Flyers surged to a 2-0 lead midway through the first half after tallying two goals in a span of 6:14. Junior Kailee O'Hara set up Nazareth's first goal, which was scored by Knapp to put the Golden Flyers on the board 20:17 into the first half. O'Hara cut through the head of the circle and found Knapp with a pass, who was on the left side of the circle. Knapp fired her shot into the lower right corner of the goal to beat Rochester's goalie.
With just under 10 minutes remaining before halftime, Nazareth struck again to claim a 2-0 lead following a corner. After the corner was deflected by the Yellowjackets' defender, junior
Lindsey Smith collected the rebound and passed to Wagner at the top of the circle, who put a screened shot into the left side of the goal to extend Nazareth's advantage.
The Golden Flyers' defenders silenced Rochester in the first half, allowing just one shot on goal and one corner in the first 35 minutes. After Nazareth's stellar defense shutout Rochester in the first half, the Yellowjackets scored less than seven minutes into the second half. Anna Dobrzynski sliced Rochester's deficit to one goal with her fourth goal in the Yellowjackets' first three games. With 12:44 remaining in regulation, Alexis Vangellow evened the game at two goals apiece. Belle Hoagland and Megan Keil were each credited with an assist on Rochester's goals.
Despite the Yellowjackets' rally, the Golden Flyers continued to battle. With roughly eight minutes to play in the second half, Nazareth thwarted Rochester's best attempt to take the lead in regulation. After a corner, the Golden Flyers' defense blocked a shot Allison Beardsley, which was followed seconds later by consecutive saves by freshman goalie
Sophia Rhoades. Following another corner, Rhoades also made a final second save against Beardsley as regulation expired.
The Yellowjackets finished with a 14-2 advantage in shots and a 12-3 advantage in corners. Rhoades finished with seven saves for Nazareth, including two in overtime. Outside of the Golden Flyers' two goals, Rochester's defense did not allow Nazareth additional shots.
The Golden Flyers are in action again Saturday and Sunday when they host the Nazareth Tournament. Nazareth will take on Oswego on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Golden Flyers will then play either Denison or Brockport on Sunday.
