PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth earned a hard-fought 1-1 tie with Plattsburgh Saturday in the opening game of the Cardinal Classic, hosted by Plattsburgh. Senior
Eric Conte scored to tie the game for the Golden Flyers with 1:09 remaining in regulation.
The Cardinals outscored Nazareth 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to Sunday's title game, and they will play Endicott, who defeated Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the second match-up. The Golden Flyers will play Wisonsin-Oshkosh in the consolation match at 9 a.m. Sunday. The game time was moved up due to an ominous weather forecast.
Kristie Pageau gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead after scoring off a loose ball following a save by the Golden Flyers'
Abbie Carey. Carey finished the game with five saves, including two in overtime to keep the score tied.
Conte's last minute game-tying goal was set up by
Anne Czelusniak. After Plattsburgh's goalkeeper, Danielle Schmitt, misread the play, Conte beat the Cardinals' defender to tie the score. Schmitt finished with three saves.
In the penalty kick session,
Kaylee Benz,
Kerry Gannon and
Tori Ryan scored for Nazareth, while
Kelly Kuhn and Czelusniak missed their attempts. Danielle Weimer, Emily LaLone, Lauren Gonyea and Charisse Abellard converted kicks for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh finished with a 16-12 advantage in shots while the Golden Flyers had a 7-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
