SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth opened a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute on a goal by sophomore
James Wheeler, however, Union rallied with two unanswered goals to defeat the Golden Flyers 2-1 in a non-conference men's soccer game Tuesday evening.
Following the loss, Nazareth drops to 4-4 overall. The Golden Flyers resume their conference schedule Saturday with a critical game at Stevens. The Dutchmen improve to 8-1 overall following the victory.
Wheeler broke the scoreless tie early in the first half with an unassisted goal. Wheeler finished with four shots to lead the Golden Flyers. Union's stalwart defense thwarted Nazareth's offense through much of the game. Following sophomore
Ryan Foley's shot with about 22 minutes remaining in regulation, the Dutchmen's defense did not allow another shot as the Golden Flyers attempted to score the tying goal.
Marc Zeyak scored the game-tying goal in the 29th minute, followed by the eventual game-winning goal by Sebastiaan Jansen in the 68th minute. Prior to its one-goal loss to RIT, the Dutchmen were ranked 18th nationally thanks to the offensive attack by Zeyak and Jansen. Each player came into the contest against Nazareth with seven goals.
The Golden Flyers' defense prevented Union's powerful attack much of the game, limiting the Dutchmen to 12 total shots, including eight on goal. Union came into the contest with Nazareth outscoring opponents 33-4 in its previous eight games. Senior
Kyle Connolly finished with a game-high six saves. Nazareth tallied eight total shots, including five on goal. Mike Szczesniak recorded four saves for the victory.

Chris Mitchell and
Andrew Alaimo, and sophomore
Luke Elston recorded one shot apiece for the Golden Flyers.
Union had an overwhelming 13-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Golden Flyers' back line forced the Dutchmen into four offsides positions, as opposed to one for Nazareth.
