Nazareth ties Stevens, 1-1

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- Visiting Nazareth battled Stevens to a hard-fought 1-1 tie in a women's Empire 8 soccer game Saturday. Freshman Elizabeth Howell scored in the 60th minute to temporarily give the Golden Flyers a one-goal edge. The Ducks' Bridgette Barden answered in the 79th minute to tie the score.

Nazareth moves to 2-2-3 overall following the tie. Stevens stands at 4-3-2 overall.

The Golden Flyers had opportunities to win the game toward the end of overtime as sophomore Kristina McCann and senior Erica Conte each had a shot in the final minutes of the extra period. Kaitlin McClymont's save on Conte's shot came as the final seconds expired.

Nazareth's defense held the Ducks off the board in overtime by blocking a shot by Barden. A shot by Ann Heine, three minutes into the extra session, was off the mark.

Conte was credited with an assist after setting up Howell's goal by sending a cross from the left wing. Howell redirected the pass on net to break the scoreless tie about 15 minutes into the second half.

Barden's goal, with about 11 minutes to play in regulation, was a result of a deflected pass off a Nazareth defender. The goal was scored just seconds after an initial shot by Barden was blocked by the Golden Flyers' defense.

In the closing minutes of regulation, both teams had scoring opportunities. With about 10 minutes to play, sophomore Anne Czelusniak's shot was saved by McClymont. McClymont tallied seven saves. About two minutes after Czelusniak's shot, the Ducks' Brittany Odgers attempted header hit the post. Sophomore Abbie Carey made the save on Caitlyn Labonte's shot with about five minutes remaining in regulation. Carey finished with nine saves.

Stevens had a 24-12 overall advantage in shots, however, Nazareth's defense only allowed the Ducks 10 shots on goal in the physical contest. The Golden Flyers had eight shots on goal. Stevens also finished with an 8-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Nazareth travels to Alfred on Saturday afternoon for to take on the Saxons in another Empire 8 contest. The Golden Flyers' next home game is October 15th when Nazareth hosts Elmira.
