ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host RIT scored the lone goal in the closing minutes of the first half to defeat Nazareth 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game. Sophomore
James Wheeler tallied a team-high three shots for the visiting Golden Flyers.
Following the loss, Nazareth drops to 4-2 overall. RIT improves to 3-3-1 overall with the victory. Tuesday's contest featured the first men's soccer game between the schools since the Tigers moved to the Liberty League.
Matt Broedel recorded his first goal of the season to snap the scoreless tie 42:22 into the first half. James Whelan and Dan Holowaty were each credited with an assist on Broedel's goal. Holowaty leads the Tigers in total scoring with five goals and two assists. To set up the goal, Holowaty made a run down the left flank. He crossed a pass into in the middle of the box to Whelan. Whelan found Broedel with a pass who had made a run down the right flank. Broedel gathered the pass, and rifled a shot that hit off goalkeeper
Kyle Connolly's hands and into the top corner. Connolly finished the contest with seven saves.
The Tigers and Golden Flyers finished similarly in total shots with RIT holding a 14-11 edge, however, the Tigers' defense only allowed Nazareth three shots on goal. RIT's goalie, Sean Conway, stopped one shot apiece by seniors
Chris Eccles and
Andrew Alaimo, and sophomore
Simon Mounsdon to record his third shutout of the season.
Perhaps Nazareth's best scoring opportunity came in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Following a misplay by Conway in the RIT penalty area, sophomore
Luke Elston gathered the loose ball and fired a shot that RIT defender Donnie Maguire
blocked out of harms way.
The Golden Flyers finished the match with a 9-6 advantage in corner kick opportunities. RIT and Nazareth were whistled for 10 fouls and five fouls, respectively.
The Golden Flyers resume their conference schedule when they host Elmira on Saturday at 1 p.m.
