FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth turned in a strong effort Tuesday in a non-conference men's soccer match against Fredonia and the Golden Flyers were rewarded with a 2-1 overtime win as sophomore
Luke Elston netted the game-winning score in the 98th minute.
Nazareth improved to 3-1 with the victory while Fredonia dropped to 4-2 overall. The Golden Flyers open their Empire 8 Conference schedule on the road Saturday at Utica at 7 p.m.
Tuesday's overtime win came three days after the Golden Flyers were upset at Oswego for their first defeat of the season. Elston scored both goals for Nazareth Tuesday and now has a team-best five goals on the season.
"It was a strong effort for us," said Nazareth coach
Danny Gilbertson. "We had the better of the play most of the way."
After a scoreless first half, Elston broke the tie in the 70th minute as he headed in a corner kick off the foot of sophomore
James Wheeler.
Fredonia evened the score about seven minutes later as Tyler Williams converted on a penalty kick following a Nazareth foul in the penalty area. Other than that goal, senior goalkeeper
Kyle Connolly was solid in making four saves.
In overtime, the ball was played into the Nazareth penalty area, where sophomore
Simon Mounsdon took a shot that was blocked by a Fredonia defender. Elston gathered the rebound and fired the winning shot that glanced off the left post before settling into the goal.
Nazareth had a 23-13 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in corner kicks. Fredonia's goalie, Bobby McGinnis, made six saves.
Both teams entered the game ranked in the NSCAA East Region. Fredonia was ranked sixth and Nazareth tied for 10th.
