ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth opened its Empire 8 Conference softball schedule Saturday with a doubleheader against Elmira. The Golden Flyers dropped both games -- 7-0 and 13-1.
Nazareth is now 3-13 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Elmira improved to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8.
In the first game, Nazareth pitcher
Kelly Kocher had the Soaring Eagles shut out through the first five innings before tiring in the sixth. Overall, she walked four and struck out 10.
Elmira broke the scoreless deadlock with one run in the sixth and six more in the seventh. Alex Andrade singled home Erin Pruess with the run in the sixth. In the seventh Stephany Fontinell laced a two-run single and Caitlin Roman knocked home two more runs with a double.
Nazareth's best scoring chance came in the bottom half of the sixth as
Claire Campbell and
Kailey Ritch each reached on singles. Elmira's Alex Puglisi relieved starting pitcher Casandra Fontinell and promptly struck out the next three Nazareth hitters to end the threat.
Campbell and Ritch each had two singles as did freshman
Liz Toner.
In the second game, Elmira pounded out 13 hits, seven coming in a nine-run second inning. Senior Erin Rupell homered twice and knocked in four runs. Roman and Stephany Fontinell each went 3-for-3.
Nazareth lone run came in the fourth inning on a solo home run by
Brittany Patenaude.
The Golden Flyers play two more games Sunday at home against Stevens at 1 p.m.
