Nazareth falls twice to Alfred

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Alfred swept a softball doubleheader from Nazareth Saturday as the Saxons got a pair of complete-game pitching performances to take 2-0 and 8-3 victories over the Golden Flyers.

Alfred improved to 14-9 overall and 5-7 in Empire 8 Conference games. Nazareth is 5-27 overall and 1-11 in conference play.

In the first game, senior Chelsey Cary tossed a five-hit shutout for the Saxons and had three strikeouts. In the second game, junior Nicole Hedrick gave up three runs in the first inning then shut Nazareth out the rest of the way. She scattered six his and struck out five.

Nazareth had a strong pitching performance from junior Casey Mathers in game one as she gave up just four hits and one earned run to go with eight strikeouts. Alfred scored both its runs in the third inning, highlighted by Molly Shepherd's run-scoring single. Freshman Sarah Cipperly stroked a pair of doubles for Nazareth. Nazareth left the bases loaded in the second inning and sophomore Mandy Weakley was left stranded at third in the fourth inning following a one-out double.

In the second game, Alfred had nine hits, including a solo home run by Angela Netta in the second inning. Nazareth scored all of its runs in the bottom of the first. Freshmen Claire Campbell and Kailey Ritch each singled and sophomore Kaitlin Graham reached on an error to load the bases. Weakley followed with a two-run single and Graham later scored on an infield grounder by Brittany Patenaude.

Alfred Netta' homer tied the score, Alfred got single runs in the third and fourth innings and three more in the sixth. Shepherd finished 3-for-4 while Hedrick and Netta each had two hits.

Nazareth closes out its season Sunday at RIT at 1 p.m.
