Nazareth splits pair against Oswego

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth split a pair of non-conference softball games Thursday against visiting Oswego. The Golden Flyers rallied to win the first game 6-5. However, the Lakers answered with an 8-4 win in the second game.

Nazareth now holds a 4-20 overall record, while Oswego is now 6-18 overall.

In the first game, Nazareth was able to snap a 12-game losing streak by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Kailey Ritch hit a solo home run to tie the score at 5-5. Then after back-to-back walks to Brittany Patenaude and Casey Mathers, Mandy Weakley stroked a run-scoring single to score Patenaude with the go-ahead run.

Mathers was the winning pitcher for the Golden Flyers as she pitched all seven innings and had seven strikeouts. She tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning against the Lakers to preserve the victory.

Nazareth had 11 hits overall, including three by Weakley and two each by Ritch and Sarah Cipperley.

In the second game, Nazareth scored four times in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. Jennifer Durso had a run-scoring single and Kasey Pollot knocked in two more runs with a single.

Oswego rallied for two runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to take the lead for good. Nazareth, meanwhile, was held scoreless with just three hits over the last four innings. Dee Apps had three hits for the Lakers and Sue Schoff had two hits and three runs batted in. Freshmen Shauna Bardanis and Durso each had two hits for Nazareth.

Nazareth returns to Empire 8 Conference play Friday as the Golden Flyers host St. John Fisher at 3 p.m.
