Nazareth competes at Empire 8 championship

Women's and men's teams each finish sixth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth competed at the Empire 8 men's and women's track and field championships Sunday, hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology. Sophomore Katie Wyant placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.97 and fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.40 to lead the Golden Flyers' women's team. Freshman Jake Lafaver finished third in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run with times of :52.35 and 2:01.66, respectively, to lead the men's team.

Ithaca swept the men's and women's team titles. The Bombers accumulated 250 points in women's events to outscore second-place RIT (118 points) and third-place Stevens (94 points). The Golden Flyers tallied 29 team points to finish sixth. Nazareth also placed sixth in the men's meet with 17 team points. Ithaca recorded 230 points to claim the men's title, followed by RIT with 148 points and Utica with 104 points.

In the men's meet, junior Dan Polino recorded a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles as he finished with a time of :59.77. Senior Matt Morales also recorded a top-10 finish as he finished in eighth-place in the 1500-meter run (4:14.64).

Freshman Alex Nassrelgrgawi and sophomore Philip Schierer placed just outside the top-10 in the 400-meter dash with a time of :53.83 and :54.02 as they finished 11th and 12th, respectively.

In the women's meet, sophomore Lauren Jamieson recorded a second-place finish in the 1500-meter run (5:03.38) while sophomore Mindy Niebuhr finished third in the high jump with a mark of 1.55 meters. Junior Michelle Gillette placed sixth in the 5000-meter run (20:43.17).

Senior Kristi Custer, junior Alyssa Lindstrom, and freshman Bethany Althaus each added seventh-place finishes. Custer finished the 100-meter hurdle finals with a time of 17.78, and Lindstrom finished the 400-meter dash in 1:18.36. Althaus placed seventh in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13:15.56. Junior Heather Irish finished just outside the top-10 in the hammer throw with a mark of 25.37 meters.

The men's and women's track teams will be in action again April 23rd at the Geneseo Invitational. Nazareth hosts the NYSCTC multis events May 1st and 2nd.
