Nazareth rallies past Scranton, 15-9

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior attackman #C.J. Estes# scored three of his game-high four goals in the second quarter for host Nazareth Wednesday as the Golden Flyers rallied to defeat Scranton in a non-conference men's lacrosse game, 15-9.

The game, played most of the way through freezing rain, boosted the 17th-ranked Golden Flyers' record to 2-1 overall. Scranton is 2-2. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Scranton led 4-2 after one quarter, but Nazareth rallied to outscore the Royals 6-2 in the second quarter to take control for good. A goal by Scranton's Mike Rufo early in the second quarter extended the Royals' lead to 5-2 before Nazareth countered with six straight goals.

Sophomore Brian Wright scored unassisted and then senior Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar added a man-up goal. Junior John McDonnell and Estes then scored just 10 seconds apart -- both off assists from Jacobs-Ferderbar -- as Nazareth went ahead for good, 6-5. Estes scored twice more before the quarter ended, but Rufo scored for Scranton with :27 left in the half to interrupt the Nazareth surge and make the score 8-6 Nazareth at the half.

Nazareth scored four more times in the third quarter and three times in the fourth. Senior Adam Nauerth and Jacobs-Ferderbar each scored twice and freshman Chris Aycock collected his first career goal in the fourth quarter. Wright, who finished with a career-best five points on two goals and three assists, also scored in the third quarter along with senior Scott Castle.

Scranton, which got two goals each from Rufo, Daniel Slade and JP Barton, scored just 12 seconds into the game as Slade was set up by Sean Coleman. Goals by junior Nate DeLone and Estes gave Nazareth a temporary lead before the Royals scored three straight goals to close out the quarter on top 4-2.

Estes had one assist in addition to his four goals, while Jacobs-Ferderbar had three goals and three assists. Nazareth had advantages in shots (42-27) and ground balls (38-33) and each team won 14 face-offs. Senior defenseman Mitchel Frey had five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Kyle McLean also had five ground balls and won 14 of 27 face-offs. Junior goalie Grant Williams had six saves.

Nazareth's next game is Monday, March 14 vs. Western New England at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, Conn. at 4 p.m.
