CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Host Cortland, ranked 22nd nationally in Division III, swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Nazareth Wednesday. The Red Dragons scored a third-inning run for a 1-0 win in the first game and then blanked Nazareth 8-0 in a six-inning second game.
Nazareth, 3-9 overall, hosts an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader Saturday against Alfred at 1 p.m. Cortland's record is 10-2 overall.
In the first game, Cortland's Lyndsay Rowell outdueled Nazareth's
Kelly Kocher on the pitcher's mound to escape with the win to move her record to 4-0. Rowell allowed just three singles and one walk in seven innings and struck out nine. Kocher's record dropped to 3-3 as she yielded five hits and struck out six over six innings.
Cortland's third-inning run came on back-to-back one-out doubles by Lucia Meola and Abby Martin. Freshman
Claire Campbell had two of Nazareth's three singles. She was left stranded at third base in the first inning, which proved to be Nazareth best scoring chance.
In the second game, Donnalyn Cross had three hits in four at bats with two doubles and a triple to pace the Red Dragons, who had 14 hits overall. Cross tripled and scored in a six-run third inning for the Red Dragons, who added single runs in the fourth ans sixth innings to end the game.
Campbell singled in the third inning and
Mandy Weakley singled in the fourth for Nazareth's only hits of the game.
