Niebuhr, Polino break records at SLU

CANTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore Mindy Niebuhr and junior Dan Polino each broke seven-year-old school records Saturday as Nazareth continued its indoor track and field season at the Super Dual hosted by St. Lawrence University.

Nazareth lost in the men's team scoring to St. Lawrence (95-9), Plattsburgh (73-26) and Oswego (113-13) and in the women's team scoring to St. Lawrence (105-21), Plattsburgh (82-31) and Oswego (70-44), but the Golden Flyers turned in several strong individual performances.

Niebuhr finished first in the high jump by clearing 1.61 meters (5 feet, 3 1/4 inches) on her final attempt. The result broke the school record of 5 feet, 3 inches held by Jessemyn Russell since 2004.

Polino won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.07 seconds, breaking the mark of 9.13 seconds held by Jim Rolince since 2004. Polino also finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.73 meters (5 feet, 8 inches) and was eighth in the shot put with a toss of 9.76 meters (32 feet, 1/4 inches).

Also in the women's meet, senior Kristi Custer displayed her versatility by placing second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.77 meters (35 feet, 4 inches) and by finishing fourth in the 55-meter dash in 7.97 seconds. She also ran in two relays.

Nazareth finished second in the 4 x 400-meter relay (4:33.49) with the team of Kelsey Mash, Katie Wyant, Kayleigh Olive and Custer and fourth in the 4 x 200-meter relay (2:03.29) with Wyant, Olive, Niebuhr and Custer.

Wyant finished fourth in the 800-meter run om 2:31.21 and was followed closely in the same race by Mash, who placed fifth in 2:31.47. Sophomore Lauren Jamieson was ninth in the 800 (2:35.21) and fifth in the mile (5:36.71).

Freshman Bethany Althaus was sixth in the 3,000-meter run (12:09.39) as she outran teammate Sarah Wilcox to the finish line. Wilcox was seventh in 12:09.72. Junior Heather Irish placed sixth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 8.89 meters (29 feet, 2 inches). She also finished eighth in the shot put at 8.67 meters (28 feet, 5 1/2 inches).

In the men's meet, freshman Jake Lafaver finished seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:00.71. Freshman Alex Nassrelgrgawi was seventh in the 400-meter dash (:55.32). He was followed closely by freshman Zach Lafaver in eighth place (:55.49) and junior Donato DiRenzo in ninth place (:55.73).

Senior Matt Morales ran both the mile (14th place in 4:46.77) and the 3,000-meter run (13th place in 9:47.21). Nazareth also ran fourth in the 4 x 400-meter relay (3:39.86) with the foursome of Direnzo, Nassrelgrgawi, Tim Rutan and Jake Lafaver.
