ELMIRA, NY - Elmira College defeated Nazareth 62-56 in women's basketball Saturday afternoon. The Golden Flyers fall to 8-12 overall, and 4-7 in the Empire 8 conference. The Soaring Eagles are now 5-16, 2-10 in the Empire 8.
Nazareth took an early 4-0 lead in the first half before Elmira went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-4 lead. The Golden Flyers chipped away and regained a two point advantage with three minutes left, 24-22, and again with two minutes, 26-24, left to play in the half.
Both teams shot 33% from the field in the first and Elmira took a two point lead into the half, 26-24.
Brittany TallChief scored two free throws early in the second to give the Golden Flyers a 30-28 lead. The teams exchanged the lead two more times before Elmira's Maria Thannhauser scored a three-pointer with 6:47 left in the game to give The Soaring Eagles a 44-42 edge. Elmira did not trail for the remainder of the game leading by as many as eight points during the final six minutes.
TallChief led Nazareth with 17 points and had a game high 12 rebounds.
Brittany Wilson finished with 12 points, including 10 in the first half, while
Katie Kollar finished with 10. The Golden Flyers were just 28% from the field in the second half including just 15% from behind the arc (4-of-23).
Nazareth is on the road again next weekend as they travel to Stevens Tech for a 6 pm game on February 11.
