CANTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Mindy Niebuhr was Nazareth's top performer Friday as the Golden Flyers' track and field teams competed in the NYSCTC meet at St. Lawrence University.
Niebuhr soared to new heights in breaking her own school record in winning the high jump with a leap of 1.63 meters (5 feet, 4 1/4 inches). Nazareth is in seventh place in the team standings with 11 points after the first day of competition. The meet resumes Saturday at 10 a.m.
In other events, sophomore
Katie Wyant posted the third-fastest time in the 400-meter dash to qualify for Saturday's finals in :62.73 seconds. Nazareth also earned a team point in the distance medley with freshman
Bethany Althaus and sophomores
Katie Mutter,
Kelsey Mash and
Lauren Jamieson posting a time of 13:47.83. Junior
Michelle Gillette placed 11th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 20:17.93.
In the men's meet, junior
Dan Polino competed in the men's pentathlon and finished eighth with 2,941 points. His best performance in the five-event compeition was in the long jump, in which he placed third with a distance of 5.88 meters (19 feet, 3 1/2 inches).
Freshman
Jake Lafaver advanced to Saturday's final in the 400-meter dash by finishing seventh in Friday's prelims with a time of :51.76. Nazareth also scored in the distance medley with the foursome of
Tim Rutan, Zach Lafaver,
Donato DiRenzo and
Matt Morales finishing sixth in 11:03.76.
