Nazareth drops season finale, 72-67

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth dropped its season finale in women's basketball Saturday as the Golden Flyers' second-half rally fell short in a 72-67 loss to Utica.

The Golden Flyers finish the 2010-11 season at 8-17 overall and 4-12 in Empire 8 Conference play. Utica, which will compete in next week's Empire 8 Conference Tournament, improved to 15-10 overall and 11-5 in conference games.

The Pioneers had four players score in double figures, led by senior Jessica Berry, who had 22 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Meghan Fiore added 20.

Utica built a double-digit advantage in the first half as the Pioneers' lead grew to 16 points, 38-22, following a three-pointer by Katie McGee (14 points) with 3:33 left in the half.

Nazareth's Brittany Patenaude nailed a three-pointer and Brittany TallChief made a basket to slice the Nazareth deficit to 11, 38-27, by halftime.

Nazareth rallied in the second half and was able to tie the score on two occasions, before Utica pulled away. Nazareth's Brittany Wilson sank a pair of free throws with 7:50 to go to knot the score at 50-50. Utica answered with baskets by Berry and Fiore on its next two possessions and was ahead the rest of the way.

A three-pointer by Katie Kollar drew Nazareth within three, 68-65, with 1:13 to go, but Fiore and McGee each sank two free throws in the final minute to preserve the win for the Pioneers.

Wilson led all scorers with 28 points. Kollar finished with 14 and sophomore Jenee Vanderstyne had 11. The game was the final one for Nazareth seniors Mary Holland and Hillary Simon along with student assistant for basketball operations Katie McCarthy.

Simon had four points and three rebounds in nine minutes. Holland had missed the last 14 games due to a knee injury, but started Saturday's game and logged six minutes.
