ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Host Hartwick rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit Saturday to outscore Nazareth 41-27 in the second half to take a 64-62 women's basketball victory over Nazareth.
The loss was the fifth in a row for the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 8-14 overall and 4-9 in Empire 8 Conference play. Hartwick improved to 8-13 overall and 5-8 in conference games.
Nazareth got off to a good start and never trailed in the first 20 minutes. The Golden Flyers were up by as many as 13 points, 25-12, in the first half following a basket by
Ashley Gallagher with 5:54 to play. After Hartwick closed to within three late in the half, Nazareth regained its double-digit advantage as
Danielle Chamberlain hit a three-pointer with :23 left to make it a 12-point game at halftime, 35-23.
In the second half, Hartwick chipped away at Nazareth's lead, but the Golden Flyers still led by 11, 43-32, after a three-pointer by
Jenee Vanderstyne with 15:53 left. Hartwick finally tied the score at 59-59 on a three-pointer by Fritzi Flores with 3:03 left. The Hawks took their first lead of the game moments later as freshman Maria Foglia sank two free throws for two of her game-high 23 points.
Two free throws by Vanderstyne tied the score again at 61-61 with 1:46 left, but the Hawks secured the lead for good, 64-61, when Foglia connected from long distance with 1:01 left. Nazareth's
Katie Kollar missed an attempt to tie the score with :42 left and after Hartwick missed a chance to extend its lead, Vanderstyne made one of two free throws with :06 left to finish up the scoring. After Vanderstyne missed the second foul shot, Hartwick was able to control the defensive rebound and run the clock out.
Brittany Patenaude was Nazareth's high scorer with 13 points. Vanderstyne added 11 and Gallagher nine. Foglia's 23 points included two three-pointers and 13 free throws in 14 attempts. Kate Purcell and Kate Veit each scored 11 for the Hawks.
Nazareth is home Tuesday to play St. John Fisher at 6 p.m.
