Nazareth outscores Hartwick, 90-76

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Five players scored in double figures for visiting Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers earned a much-needed men's basketball victory by outscoring Hartwick, 90-76.

The win avenged an earlier defeat as the Golden Flyers improved to 13-9 overall and 6-7 in Empire 8 Conference play with three regular-season games remaining. Hartwick is 9-4 in conference play and 14-8 overall. The victory moves Nazareth within one game of fourth place in the Empire 8 standings. RIT lost at Stevens Saturday and has six conference losses as does St. John Fisher, which defeated Utica at home. Nazareth has three regular-season games remaining, beginning with Tuesday's home game against St. John Fisher at 8 p.m. Nazareth also visits Alfred Friday at 8 p.m. and hosts Utica Saturday at 4 p.m.

Nazareth led nearly the entire game against the Hawks. The Golden Flyers shot 54.3 percent from the field in the first half in surging to a 49-34 lead. Junior Jason Corletta scored 14 of his team-high 22 points in the first 20 minutes, including three three-pointers, and freshman Brad Ford scored 12.

The Golden Flyers maintained their double digit lead well into the second half before Hartwick crept back to within six point, 72-66, following a basket by Anthony Keane with 8:11 to play. Nazareth's Greg Lothridge scored on a dunk on the Golden Flyers' next possession and sophomore Dan Waldbillig followed with another basket to push the lead back to 10, 76-66, with 7:00 to go.

Corletta's 22 points equaled his career high. Waldbillig finished with 19 points and five rebounds, Ford had 18 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Lothridge and sophomore Tyshun Stephens each scored 10. Lothridge also contributed eight rebounds and four blocks. Stephens had five assists.

Nazareth shot 50 percent for the game (32 for 64), including 7 for 20 from three-point range (35 percent). Hartwick freshman Jared Suderley led all scorers with 23 points. Mark Blazek scored 16 points and Andres Carpio had 13. Hartwick defeated Nazareth in the teams' previous meeting, 59-54, on Jan. 7.
