ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth's men's soccer season came to a disappointing halt at home Friday as Elmira advanced to Sunday's Empire 8 Conference championship game after converting four penalty kicks to Nazareth's three. That came after the game officially ended in a 2-2 tie through 110 minutes.

Despite a whopping 29-10 edge in shots during the game, Nazareth's season likely came to an unceremonious conclusion as the Golden Flyers record is now 10-6-1. Elmira, now 12-2-2 overall, will play at Stevens Sunday for the E8 title. Stevens defeated Ithaca, 2-1, in the other first-round match.

Alexander Poole, Alston Eldridge, Jared Micheller and Jared Cipriano converted penalty kicks for the Soaring Eagles, while Nazareth goalie #Kyle Connolly made saves on attempts by Edward Michelson and Andre Germano. James Wheeler#, #Sean Dorman and Simon Mounsdon scored pks for Nazareth. An attempt by Rikesh Lad caromed off the crossbar and Micheller saved attempts by Liam Connolly and Chris Eccles#.

Despite the statistical advantage, Nazareth had to come from behind twice after surrendering goals early in each half. Eldridge gave Elmira a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute after finishing a pass from Jason Guernsey, who broke free along the endline. Nazareth tied the score in the 32nd minute on a goal by #Ryan Foley#. After a Lad throw-in was punched away by Micheller, the ball landed at the feet of Foley who finished the play for his fifth goal of the season.

In the second half, Elmira regained the lead at 2-1 in the 49th minute as Germano scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season off an assist from Ernesto Velverde.

Nazareth forced overtime on Dorman's first goal of the season in the 74th minute. The play originated on a corner kick by Wheeler, then wound up on the head of Mounsdon, who redirected the ball to Dorman for the tying score.

Nazareth led 2-1 in the penalty kick session before Liam Connolly's kick was saved by Micheller, then Eldridge scored for Elmira to knot the session at 2-2. Mounsdon scored Nazareth's third goal, but Micheller answered for the Soaring Eagles to tie the score again.

Eccles, who had not played during the game itself, took Nazareth's sixth kick and Micheller saved it to set up Elmira's winning kick by Cipriano.

In addition to the 29-10 edge in shots, Nazareth had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Kyle Connolly made three saves for Nazareth, while Micheller had eight for Elmira.
