BUFFALO, N.Y. – Host Medaille handed Nazareth its first men's basketball defeat of the season Saturday as the Mavericks built a four-point halftime lead, then pulled away in the second half to take a 75-64 victory over the Golden Flyers. The game was the championship of the Knee Center of Western New York Tip-Off Tournament at Medaille's Sullivan Gymnasium.
Nazareth dropped to 2-1 overall and hosts Rochester in a non-conference game Tuesday at 7 p.m. Medaille improved to 3-0.
Steve Bryant scored 18 points for the Mavericks and Tyler Stevens added 17.
Jason Corletta scored 16 for Nazareth and
Tyshun Stephens added 14 points and seven assists. Stephens and sophomore
Brad Ford represented Nazareth on the all-tournament team. Ford, who had 25 points in Friday's win over Morrisville, had 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds against Medaille.
Nazareth led by as many as six points in the first half, 20-14, following a basket by
Jamell Johnson with 11:07 to go. The game stayed close and Nazareth still led 32-31 following a pair of free throws by Ford with 2:44 to go.
Medaille, however, closed out the half with a basket by David Shuey and a three-pointer by Bryant to take a four-point lead, 36-32, at the half.
The Golden Flyers played catch-up in the second half and couldn't recover from the halftime deficit. Medaille's lead grew to nine points on three separate occasions, before Nazareth drew within five points, 59-54, on a three-pointer by Ford with 5:28 left.
Medaille responded with a 6-1 scoring run, capped by two free throws from Jammal Ccoleman, to stretch the lead to 10 points, 65-55, with less than four minutes left.
Phil Scaffidi hit a three-pointer for Nazareth with 3:32 to go to make it 65-58, but that was as close as the Golden Flyers would get as Bryant hit a five free throws in the final 1:23 to seal the win for the Mavericks.
