UTICA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth scored two goals late in the second half to defeat Utica 2-0 in a women's Empire 8 Conference soccer game Sunday afternoon. Freshman Kaitlyn Sowyrda broke the scoreless tie, followed by a goal by junior Katie Wyant. Sowyrda's and Wyant's goals were the first of the season for each player.

The Golden Flyers improve to 6-2-3 overall, including 3-0-1 in Empire 8 contests. The Pioneers fall to 3-9 overall, including 1-4 in conference games. With its shutout of Utica, Nazareth has not allowed an opponent to score in four consecutive games, extending beyond 400 minutes of action.

After being held scoreless for 75 minutes, the Golden Flyers converted on a break away opportunity to take a 1-0 edge. Sophomore Anne Czelusniak set up Sowyrda's goal to earn the assist. Czelusniak was also credited with the assist on Wyant's insurance goal, which came about five minutes later. After getting the ball at the top of the box, Czelusniak found Wyant, who tucked her shot inside the far post.

Defensively, Nazareth was dominant for the second game in two days. A day after allowing Hartwick only four shots on goal, the Golden Flyers limited the Pioneers to two total shots, neither of which were on goal. Sophomores Abbie Carey and Bethany Novak each saw 45 minutes of action in goal for Nazareth, however, neither goalkeeper was forced to make a save.

The Golden Flyers finished with an overwhelming 22-2 advantage in total shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Ten of the Golden Flyers' shots were on goal. Christine Belding created several scoring opportunities finished with a game-high four shots on goal. Nazareth's offensive players were whistled for six offsides as the Golden Flyers continually attacked Utica's defensive zone. Samantha Glockling tallied eight saves in the losing effort for the Pioneers.

The Golden Flyers return to Nazareth October 15th to host Elmira in a conference game at 12 p.m.
