Sarah Eichelberger scored the game-winning goal for visiting Nazareth in the 109th minute to lift the Golden Flyers to a 1-0 overtime victory over Hartwick in an Empire 8 women's soccer game Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Abbie Carey tallied four saves to record her third consecutive shutout. Nazareth's tenacious defense has not allowed a goal since playing Stevens on September 24th, which has covered over 319 minutes.
The Golden Flyers improve to 5-2-3 overall and 2-0-1 in conference contests. The Hawks drop to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in Empire 8 games. Nazareth resumes its conference road trip Sunday afternoon when the Golden Flyers travel to Utica. Nazareth returns home to host Elmira on October 15th.
Eichelberger's goal, coming with 1:09 remaining in the second overtime session, is her first of the 2011 season. Senior
Kelly Kuhn set up the scoring opportunity with a free kick outside of the Hawks' box. From near the corner, Kuhn served the ball to sophomore
Anne Czelusniak, who took an initial shot, but it was blocked by a Hartwick defender. The rebound ricocheted to Eichelberger who buried her attempt from about 12 yards away. Eichelberger substituted into the game only minutes prior to her goal. Carey allowed Eichelberger's game-winning shot to be possible by making a save on the Hawks' Kylie Thayer less than a minute earlier.
The Golden Flyers' offense created several scoring opportunities. Senior
Erica Conte recorded a game-high four shots for Nazareth. Eichelberger, Kuhn,
Amanda Sudore,
Deborah Towle, and
Katie Wyant also recorded two shots apiece. The Golden Flyers opened the second half with a fury of five shots and four corner kicks, but they were unable to score. In the 50th minute, Conte was alone in front of the Hawks' goal, but her shot hit the right post.
After shutting out 25th-ranked Rochester earlier this week, the Golden Flyers' defense allowed only four shots on goal Saturday afternoon. Carey made two saves in the first half, one in the second half, and one in the second session of overtime. Nazareth limited Hartwick's offense by silencing the dangerous trio of Kate Schild, Cristina Sicari, and Blair Hooper. Coming into the match with Nazareth, Schild, Sicari, and Hooper combined for 11 of the Hawks 14 season goals. The Golden Flyers limited the three players to just two shots on goal.
Nazareth domintated Hartwick in the primary statistical areas. The Golden Flyers finished with a 19-7 overall advantage in shots, including a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. Nazareth also recorded a monstrous 14-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Hope Brown held the Golden Flyers off the board for almost 109 minutes and finished with 11 saves.
