ROCHESTER, NY - Stevens Institute of Technology scored four first half goals and hung on to defeat Nazareth 5-3 in field hockey Saturday afternoon. The Golden Flyers drop to 2-10, 1-3 in the Empire 8 while the Ducks improved to 6-5, 3-1 in the conference.
Stevens out-shot Nazareth 22-1 and had 17 corners in the first half enroute to a 4-1 lead after the first.
Nazareth's
Alexis Root scored off a feed from
Tessa Knapp to give the Golden Flyers a 1-0 lead at 15:38 before the Ducks scored four straight. The Ducks had four different goal scorers in the first half: Megan Traub, Marguerite Chavez, Rachel Chavez, and Jillian Price.
In the second half, the Golden Flyers scored off a penalty corner at 51:46 to make the score 4-2. The goal was scored by Knapp and assisted by
Sarah Wazenkewitz.
Nazareth had several scoring opportunities in the second half, including a goal called back for a blocking penalty as well as a missed penalty stroke at 13:43. Finally Nazareth's
Haley Potter connected on a penalty corner from
Lindsey Smith to bring the Golden Flyers within one (4-3) with seven minutes remaining. It was Potter's first goal of the season.
Stevens' Rachel Chavez scored a security goal with under a minute left to put the Ducks up by two, 5-3.
Nazareth out-shot Stevens 10-6 in the second half and had seven penalty corners to the Ducks four. Overall the Ducks had a huge 21-9 advantage in corners and 28-11 advantage in shots.
The Golden Flyers are home again next Saturday, October 15 at 12 p.m. They host Washington & Jefferson College.
