ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth staged a dramatic fourth-set rally Wednesday to defeat the University of Rochester in a non-conference women's volleyball match at the Kidera Gymnasium.
Trailing 11-1 in the fourth set, Nazareth rallied to win 26-24 to take a four-set triumph over the Yellowjackets. Scores were 25-17, 23-25, 25-14, 26-24. The victory avenged two earlier defeats to the Yellowjackets and improved the Golden Flyers' overall record to 14-9. UR dropped to 12-10.
With Nazareth up two sets to one, UR took advantage of some ineffective hitting by Nazareth to take an 11-1 lead in the fourth set. Nazareth rallied as senior
Leah Farrell had four of her seven kills, while freshman
Maria Allocco produced two kills and five blocks.
UR still led 16-10 before Nazareth rattled off six straight points to tie the set. Junior
Brittany Crocetti had two service aces during the run and Allocco had three blocks. After UR inched back in front, Nazareth used three straight blocks and a UR hitting error to go back in front.
UR regained the lead at 24-23 on a service ace by Savannah Benton, but Nazareth scored the final three points. First
Aubrey Cooke and
Ashlee Travis combined for a block, then Cooke and Travis closed out the match with kills to complete the comeback.
Allocco finished with 12 kills for Nazareth to go with seven blocks. Travis added eight kills and Cooke combined 30 assists with seven digs and three blocks.
Kelly Mulrey led UR with 10 kills. Lauren Bujnicki had 21 digs and Xiaoyi Li had 28 assists.
Nazareth is off this weekend before traveling to play SUNYIT Monday at 3 p.m.
