CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Three different players scored first-half goals as the Cortland field hockey team defeated Nazareth, 3-0, Wednesday in non-conference action at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons won their seventh straight game to improve to 8-3 on the season. The Golden Flyers fell to 2-9 with the setback.
Juniors Liz DeWaters (Lockport/Royalton-Hartland) and Sara Woodward (Ancram/Pine Plains) and sophomore Holly Flanigan (Amherst/Williamsville North) each scored a goal for Cortland. Sophomore Erin Smith (Greene) recorded two assists, and sophomore Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown) added one assist. Cortland's three goalies split time in the cage. Junior Emily von Schondorf (Webster/Webster Thomas) did not face a shot in the first half. Freshman Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) made one save in 19 minutes, 53 seconds, and freshman Rachel Moccaldi (Clinton) did not register a save over the final 15:07.
Freshman goalie
Shannon Winney (Akron) started for Nazareth, making four saves and allowing three goals in 26:15 before giving way to freshman
Sophia Rhoades (Highland/Our Lady of Lourdes), who stopped 10 shots in 43:45. Senior
Jordan Mitchell (Oneida) and junior
Alex Bracy (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) recorded defensive saves for the Golden Flyers.
Cortland pressured Nazareth early, but defensive saves by Bracy and Mitchell five minutes apart kept the Red Dragons off the scoreboard. Cortland eventually broke through 13:37 into the game when DeWaters deflected Smith's cross from the right past Winney. Flanigan upped the lead to 2-0 at 20:27, sending a long shot from the left side through traffic off Smith's assist. Woodward closed out the scoring at 26:15. Vdoviak touched a pass in the arc to Woodward, who one-timed a shot from the right side for her seventh goal of the season.
Nazareth's best chance to score came with 28:30 remaining in the second half. Junior
Kailee O'Hara (Camden) broke in alone on the right side of the arc but Perricone charged off her line to deny O'Hara's shot from close range.
Nazareth returns home Saturday to host Stevens in an Empire 8 Conference match at 12:30 p.m.
