ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Hobart got the only goal of the game in the second half Monday as the 17th-ranked Statemen held on to blank Nazareth, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Hobart improved to 11-2 overall, while Nazareth dipped to 6-6. The Golden Flyers resume their Empire 8 Conference schedule Saturday with a home match against Alfred at 3 p.m. Hobart has won the last six meetings with the Golden Flyers in men's soccer and is unbeaten (8-0-1) over the last nine meetings.
Junior Caetano Sanchez netted the game's lone goal in the 60th minute after he settled a long, cross-field pass from the right wing from senior Tommy Hayes. Sanchez then lofted a shot over the head of Nazareth keeper
Kyle Connolly for his second goal of the season.
Nazareth had slim advantages in shots (15-13) and corner kicks (6-5), Hobart keeper Alex Witherell, making just his second start of the season, made four saves for the shutout. Connolly finished with five saves for Nazareth. Junior
Scott Duarte had, perhaps, Nazareth's best scoring chance in the second half, when he one-timed a high shot over Witherell's head, but the ball was knocked out of play by a Hobart defender.
