ROCHESTER, NY – Visiting Stevens Institute of Technology scored 36 second half points to defeat host Nazareth College 55-42 in Empire 8 women's basketball action Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Ducks remain undefeated in the conference 3-0 and improve to 10-1 overall. The Golden Flyers are now 5-7, 1-2 in the Empire 8.
Both teams struggled to get into a scoring rhythm in the first half. Stevens had an early six point lead, 10-2, with 14:18 left in the first, before going scoreless for nearly ten minutes. Paige Armstrong sunk a free throw to end the Ducks scoring draught and tie the game 11-11 with 4:50 left in the half.
The Golden Flyers had their own six minute scoring draught before finishing the half with seven points in the final four minutes to take a one point lead 20-19. Nazareth's
Brittany Patenaude and
Erica Shaw scored back-to-back three pointers to close out the half.
Katie Kollar sunk a three pointer to open the second half and extended the Golden Flyers lead to 23-19. Stevens then went on a 16-5 run to take a 35-28 lead with 13:27 left in the game.
During Stevens' run, a field goal by Molly Spadaro and two good free throws by Jillian Barrett tied the game at 23 with 18:30 left. The Ducks took the lead for good, 30-28, with 15:18 left in the game.
The Golden Flyers shot just 23% from the field and 53% from the line in the game. The Ducks improved their first half field goal percentage of 27% to shoot 12-26 (46%) in the second half.
Wilson finished with a team high 14 points and 12 rebounds for Nazareth including nine points and six rebounds in the first half. Patenaude finished with 10 points while
Brittany TallChief, Kollar, and Shaw all finished with 6 points each.
Stevens' Barrett led all scorers with 16 points. Armstrong finished with 13 points and a team high 14 rebounds.
The Golden Flyers are home again on Tuesday, January 11 for an Empire 8 contest against RIT at 6 pm.
