UTICA, N.Y. -- Nazareth's
Brittany Wilson scored 22 of her game-high 28 points in the second half Friday, but host Utica scored the first nine points of overtime to hand the Golden Flyers a 64-58 defeat in women's basketball.
The loss was the Golden Flyers' second straight in overtime and dropped them to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in the Empire 8 Conference. Utica improved to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the E8. Nazareth also lost Tuesday at St. John Fisher, 71-65 in overtime.
The game was close throughout with Nazareth ahead by one, 28-27, at halftime. The Golden Flyers had five-point leads on three occasions in the second half, but couldn't hold on. They led 52-49 following a three-pointer by Wilson with 2:35 left in regulation.
Utica rallied behind Meghan Fiore (24 points), who made two baskets in the final minute with the second ending in a three-point play with :07 left to give the Pioneers a 54-52 lead. Nazareth, however, forced overtime when Wilson took the inbounds pass and drove to the basket for the tying score before time expired.
In overtime, Utica dominated as Jessica Berry scored five of her 17 points. Fiore's basket in the opening minute of the extra period gave the Pioneers the lead for good at 56-54 and Nazareth couldn't recover.
A three-pointer and another basket by Berry were sandwiched around a pair of free throws by Katie McGee to push Utica's lead to nine points, 63-54. Nazareth came back with last-minute baskets by Wilson and
Hillary Simon, but it came too late.
In scoring her 28 points, Wilson hit 11 of 22 shots from the field with four three-pointers. Junior
Ashley Gallagher added eight points for the Golden Flyers, who made 23 of 55 shots (41.8 percent), including 7 of 20 three-pointers (35 percent).
Jenee Vanderstyne had seven assists.
For Utica, Fiore had a game-high 11 rebounds in addition to her 24 points. Devon Croll added nine points and had five of Utica's 14 steals as the Pioneers forced Nazareth into 28 turnovers..
Nazareth is home Tuesday to play Alfred at 6 p.m.
