ROCHESTER, NY - Nazareth's
Greg Lothridge blocked a career high nine shots as the Golden Flyers defeated Elmira 69-58 in men's basketball Friday night. The win was the second straight Empire 8 victory for Nazareth and they improve to 2-3 in the conference and 9-5 overall. Elmira is winless in the conference at 0-5, and is 1-13 overall.
Lothridge leads the team with 26 blocks this season and was one block shy of tying a school record set by Adrian Myers who blocked 10 shots in a 83-56 win over Brockport in 1989. The team tied a school record set back in 1987 with 11 blocks in the game.
The first half was back-and-forth with eight lead changes. The Golden Flyers led by five with just over three minutes to go in the first before Elmira tied the score 25-25 after a made basket by Zach Simpson and a three pointer by Derrick Vogel. Nazareth's
Tyshun Stephens scored a layup with 1:25 left to give the Golden Flyers a 27-25 lead at the break.
Elmira took the lead early in the second half and led by three 35-32 with 16:00 remaining in the game. Nazareth's
Brad Ford hit two free throw's and
Dan Waldbillig converted on a layup to give Nazareth a 36-35 lead. The Golden Flyers continued to build on their lead and never trailed for the rest of the game.
Nazareth had four players score in double digits including
Phil Scaffidi and Waldbillig with 16 each. Stephens finished with 14 points and
Jason Corletta had 12. Elmira's Bobby DiPiazza led all players with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Nazareth shot 40% from the field including 45% in the second half. They were also 46% from behind the arc and 87% from behind the line.
The Golden Flyers are on the road the next two games starting with their East Ave rival St. John Fisher College on Tuesday, January 18 at 8 p.m.
