ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- RIT's Dan Holowaty netted the game-winning goal with 4:16 left in the first overtime period Sunday as RIT outlasted Nazareth 2-1 in the championship game of the Doug May Classic for men's soccer.
RIT improved to 1-0-1, while Nazareth is 0-1-1 with the conclusion of the season's first weekend.
Nazareth was five minutes away from victory as the Golden Flyers rode the wave of a first-half goal by senior
Rikesh Kotak. Freshman
Ryan Foley assisted. RIT, however, tied the score when tournament MVP Jake Yates headed in a corner kick from the foot of Justin Dambra.
That set the stage for overtime and Holowaty, who scored his second goal of the season with Dambra and John Zito getting credit for assists.
RIT had a 21-8 advantage in shots and Nazareth keeper
Kyle Connolly was called upon to make eight saves. RIT's Sean Conway made two saves.
Kotak represented Nazareth on the all-tournament team along with defenders
Sean Dorman and
James Wheeler.
Nazareth plays again Friday against Oswego at Roberts Wesleyan at 5 p.m. The Golden Flyers then play a home match against defending national champion Messiah Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
